Home Performance Testing in Richmond VA

When you call Bradley Mechanical we will schedule an initial consultation to explain the testing procedure and answer any questions you may have. Our indoor air quality expert relies on your feedback to help identify problems such as rooms that are harder to cool than others or places that seem to gather a lot of dust. The next step is testing to find other problem areas.

Evaluating HVAC equipment

Our first stop is the heating and A/C equipment. Our inspection will reveal if it is operating efficiently and show any signs of insufficient maintenance. Often, thoroughly cleaning the unit to repair clogged intake, coils and condensers will allow the unit to function better. During this phase of testing our air quality expert will also test your home air filtration and purification to determine how clean indoor air is. It is important for your family’s health to ensure outside pollution, particulates and microbial contaminants are kept out of indoor air.

The next step in making your home heating and A/C more efficient is a visual inspection of insulation. We will look for places where the insulation is insufficient or missing such as hollow wall spaces or around venting ducts. Fixing those problem areas or replacing older insulation can have a positive impact on home energy costs.

Infiltrometer™ Blower Door Test

Every home needs a certain amount of ventilation and air leakage. Healthy indoor air has to circulate through the home evenly. The problem with a majority of homes that too much leakage occurs and the result is high energy costs and rooms that are hard to heat or cool. Our inspector uses a device created by the Department of Energy to measure how airtight your home is. This comport controlled blower door system helps us locate leaks or too little ventilation and determine how to make improvements.

The next step is performing a static pressure test to find installation problems or blockages inside your ducts. Recent research shows that more than 60% of American homes are impacted by these kinds of issues and the problem is costing those homeowners cash and comfort. Finally, we will evaluate the amount of conditioned air each room contains using an air flow capture hood. Low pressure in a room shows problems with air circulation that can be addressed to make your home more efficient and comfortable.

When the testing is complete, we will explain the results and recommend ways to improve your system. We will also offer a list of suggested repairs requiring professional expertise. Our consultant will offer a detailed proposal including costs and estimated time to complete the work. Our goal is to help you increase the comfort and safety of your indoor air and save you a considerable amount (usually 10 to 50%) on your home energy costs.
